Rory Cashin

Action movie fans will be very happy by the options this Saturday and Sunday…

If you are sitting in over the weekend, and there’s a very good chance you’ve watched everything you wanna watch on Netflix, there are 18 great (and if not great, then just great fun!) movies on this Saturday and Sunday.

Kicking off with…

SATURDAY

Into The West – 3E – 15:30

“TAYTO!”

Mrs Doubtfire – Film 4 – 18:35

Robin Williams goes full RuPaul’s Drag Race in order to secretly spend more time with his kids after his wife files for divorce.

Inside Out – RTE One – 18:35

One of the best Pixar movies to date, taking place entirely inside the mind of a teenage girl who is forced to move home, away from her friends, and the emotions inside of her get lost inside her own mind.

Everest – Channel 4 – 21:00

A really brilliant cast – including Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Keira Knightley, Robin Wright, Sam Worthington and more besides – in the true story of a number of mountain climbers who attempt to survive a severe storm at the world’s highest point.

Guardians Of The Galaxy – BBC One – 22:30

Marvel’s best movie to date? Discuss.

Zombieland – Film 4 – 22:50

Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin try to survive the zombie apocalypse together. Features a scene-stealing turn by … well, actually, if you’ve never seen it, we don’t want to spoil it for you.

Predator 2 – Channel 4 – 23:20

Arnie is replaced by one half of Lethal Weapon, in this dingier, more violent sequel which moves the action from the jungles to Downtown LA. Gary Busey also stars, which should be reason enough to watch this all by itself.

Speed – RTE One – 00:20

Die Hard-on-a-bus is maybe the best “Die Hard-on-a-(fill in the blank)” of the action subgenre, with genuinely great chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and Dennis Hopper having the time of his life as the thumbless terrorist.

SUNDAY

K-9 – RTE Two – 13:55

The one that isn’t Turner & Hooch, with Jim Belushi partnered with a drug-sniffing dog to take down a drugs cartel. Funnier than you remember it being.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – Film 4 – 18:05

This is where The Hunger Games got properly good, thanks to the arrival of the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman, and a pretty great director (Francis Lawrence, no relation to Jennifer), who puts together some pretty great action sequences.

Skyfall – ITV2 – 20:00

The best Bond movie to date? Discuss.

Prisoners – TV3 – 21:00

Jake Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Maria Bello, Viola Davis, Terrence Howard, Paul Dano and Melissa Leo star in this extremely dark psychological thriller about the parents of two missing young girls who are willing to go to any lengths to get them back.

Oblivion – Film 4 – 21:00

Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Epic #1 – in this one he is one of the last humans on Earth, attempting to make the environment safe again, but all the while having flashbacks to a much different life.

War Of The Worlds – BBC One –  22:30

Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Epic #2 – a remake of a classic, teaming up with Spielberg to tell the story of an invading alien race he want to wipe out humanity so they can take the planet for themselves.

Senna – BBC4 – 23:15

Award-winning doc on the life of one of the greatest racers who ever lived, who won the F1 world championship three times before his untimely death at the age of 34.
