8 hair trends from the ’90s that all Irish women regret

It was a simpler time.

Oh, the ’90s…

It was a time of questionable clothes, music, and most importantly hairstyle choices.

From crimping to gelling, and from zigzag partings to butterfly clips, we are all guilty of making a lot of very…em…shall we say daring hair decisions back in the day.

So to prove our point here are some of the hairstyles that most Irish women had in the ’90s. We’re glad these are in the past.

The rat’s tails

Ew, ew, ew! Why did we pull two random strands of hair down in front of our faces? It was the height of sophistication back in the day but now it just seems so wrong.

The flicked out bob

I think we can blame celebs like Drew Barrymore and the Olsen twins for starting this trend. It was fab the day you got your hair done but once you slept on those flicks there was no getting them back. Especially in the days before straighteners.

Crimped hair

Crimped hair, don’t care. We were all guilty of attempting to crimp our hair at least once. Whether it was with plaits or a crimper it never quite turned out the way we wanted it to.

Slicked back

In the ’90s it seemed like we had more gel than common sense. A classic updo for proms and weddings was this slicked back number with lots and lots of gel or wax, anything that cemented your hair to your head really.

Spiky

So edgy, so cool. The spiky updo trend was another classic ’90s hair look we all tried to recreate going to a teenage disco or at a family event. Just pray there are no pictures to document your efforts, unlike poor Reese Witherspoon.

Mini buns

This one had a bit of a resurgence during the festival period but the first mini buns became really popular in the ’90s with a solid dose of help from Gwen Stefani.

Colour streaks

Before the days of balayage and dip dye, there were block colour streaks and different coloured clip in hair extensions. We used to idolise Christina’s ‘Dirty’ look. Oh, how times have changed.

Bandanas

Were you even a ’90s girl if you didn’t have one? We couldn’t quite rock it like J-Lo but we gave it a damn good attempt.
