Topshop is back, and its first Irish store may come as a surprise

McElhinney's, an independent department store in County Donegal, has confirmed that the renowned fashion brand will be available for purchase in-store as of 21 August 2025.

They 'hardlaunched' the Topshop comeback on their Instagram on Friday, captioning it: "Get ready… Topshop is coming to McElhinneys."

Rumours of Topshop returning to traditional retail had been doing the rounds for some time now due to the beloved brand teasing its return to the high street on social media.

And now it's official, Topshop will be back on the racks.

Topshop has also since confirmed it will mark its re-entry into retail with a fashion show this August.

The brand's managing director, Michelle Wilson, told Drapers that they're also working hard on permanent standalone stores, which in her words will open "at some point".

Back in 2019, Topshop announced it was closing its flagship store on Stephen's Green in Dublin as part of a restructuring plan in the Arcadia Group, putting 13,000 people out of jobs, including 500 jobs in Ireland alone.

When the world was getting back up on its feet again after the pandemic, it was revealed that Topshop had been bought out by online retail giant ASOS.  It was unveiled that ASOS paid €300 million for the Topshop brands and a further €33 million for the stock.

Even though the online giant showed plenty of initial excitement after acquiring the brand, Topshop did not seem to flourish under ASOS's rule.

In 2024, it was announced that a large majority (75%) of both Topshop and Topman had been sold to the Danish company Bestseller.

We can only hope Topshop will return to its glory days and reclaim its icon status once and for all.
