TikTok searches for “Hailey Bieber comb mask” reached 396,000 over the past week, as users flock to try the new technique for themselves. Searches on Google for ‘face mask comb’ have also risen by 346% in just one week.
But skincare professionals at SpaSeekers.com are warning against the method, warning that it could do more harm to your skin than good.
Maddie Evans, spa therapist at SpaSeekers.com, explains why this seemingly harmless trend could be sabotaging your skin:
“Hailey Bieber is no stranger to setting a trend, but in this case, it’s not one I would advise following. Her new face mask is said to provide hydration, glow, and radiance, the perfect combination of benefits for a skin care product. However, how the mask is applied matters!
“As with all skincare, makeup and beauty products, it is important to apply them in the intended way, and face masks are no different. Face masks should be applied to clean, dry skin to ensure maximum benefit. This also includes using the right application method.
“Cream, gel, or clay mask formulations should be applied using clean fingers, a brush, or a silicone mask applicator tool. That’s where the risk of using a hair comb comes in. A used comb may hold bacteria, hair, and dead skin cells, which can be transferred onto the face and trapped under the mask, risking irritation.
“On top of this, combs have hard, sharp bristles that can scratch the skin or cause accidental over-exfoliation, potentially damaging the skin barrier.
“To get the most from your skincare and avoid unnecessary irritation, always apply your face mask with clean hands, or a clean applicator designed specifically for facial use.”
