Mesotherapy: I got vitamins and amino acids injected into my face and here’s my verdict

All you need to know from my first treatment.

Denise Curtin

On the hunt for that dewy glow? That elusive glow which shines from within?

Well, mesotherapy might be right down your alley and I’ll tell you why. Currently the talk of the town and certainly a hot topic within the beauty-sphere, this minimally invasive treatment is like a superfood injection for your skin; giving it that much-needed replenish we so often need.

What is mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy involves an array of superfine injections all over your face. These injections are semi-invasive only entering the second layer of your skin, the mesoderm (hence the name). The treatment which was first created in the fifties and pioneered by French doctor, Michel Pistor, is one which is becoming exceptionally popular in Ireland in recent times.

The injections involve a “cocktail” of nutrients and essentials for your skin. We’re taking vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and moisturising hyaluronic acid to name a few which then helps to nourish, repair and protect your skin so it, in turn, copes better with the process of ageing.

This cocktail of nutrients, when injected directly into the mesoderm, encourages skin cells to function at an optimum level and so, gives your skin that strong, taut barrier to keep it looking firm, hydrated and youthful.

What did it involve and did it hurt?

I must admit, I was a little scared ahead of my treatment. I’ve never had any sort of cosmetic treatment before with my most adventurous thing being a facial or an eyebrow wax and so, it’s safe to say I was excited yet skeptical about what lied ahead of me.

Getting my treatment done at Renew Skin Clinic on Hatch Street, Dublin 2, was honestly like a day at the spa with the team fully briefing me from arrival on everything the treatment would involve and the expected results from just one session.

The longest process of the whole treatment was actually leaving the numbing cream set so that once the treatment actually began I’d feel less to nothing. The numbing cream process took about 30-40 minutes and the treatment itself took 15 minutes and I’m thrilled to report it was pain-free with the odd pinch here and there, but nothing that actually hurt.

The ladies in Renew Skin Clinic were also so accommodating and willing to stop or answer questions at any stage making the process even more enjoyable.

Mesotherapy is said to make your skin look brighter and visibly smoother from as little as one session and I definitely felt it. I’m never usually one to take a “no makeup selfie” but my skin just felt in such good condition I had to. To be honest, it actually hasn’t looked this hydrated in ages, especially since winter can be so tough on skin and I definitely felt that inner glow (take no notice of my brows!)

How many treatments do you need?

With mesotherapy, it is recommended to take a course of 5 treatments with a maintenance treatment every 1/2 years.

Now, like everything, mesotherapy isn’t a “one size fits all” treatment and so, if you’re thinking of giving it a go, you can ring Renew or book a consultation to see if you’re a suitable candidate.

Mesotherapy is a great way of maintaining young skin and combating any problems like fine lines and wrinkles before they even get a chance to arise and so, a proactive treatment for anyone in their mid-twenties or early thirties.

I’m one treatment down and I’ll certainly be going back to make a second. The confidence it gave me to rock a no makeup look was second to none and my skin has never looked better.

*Renew gave me my treatment on a complimentary basis in return for my review. However, the clinic was told in advance that my appraisal would be an honest one, and they otherwise had no control over or input into this feature.
