Is anyone else very aware of the normalisation of cosmetic work like Botox? I can't help but feel like it's as common as getting your nails done, and while there's no shame in it, some of us aren't quite comfortable with the idea of Botox.
However, there is an alternative beauty treatment rising in popularity, and it's the perfect solution for those who aren't keen on Botox.
Mesotherapy uses injections of vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts to rejuvenate and tighten skin.
It was developed by Dr Michael Pistor in France in 1952 and was originally used to relieve pain. However, it has become a hugely popular beauty treatment, and trust me when I say it does live up to the hype.
Mesotherapy uses fine needles to make a series of injections into the middle layer of your skin.
One of the best things about mesotherapy is the fact that there's no downtime. The positive change in your skin is almost instant, and you don't have to take time out to heal. However, some people may experience slight swelling or pain in the injection sites.
We spoke to Sara from SkinGlow Clinic in Dún Laoghaire about the positive impact mesotherapy can have on your skin.
Sarah shared, "Look, Botox isn’t for everyone, and that’s totally okay. Whether you’re just not into injectables or you’re not ready for anything that changes how your face moves, mesotherapy is the perfect in-between."
"It gives your skin a proper drink from the inside out, packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid, vitamins, and skin-loving minerals. But here’s the magic bit: it also stimulates your skin’s own collagen and elastin production. So it’s not just a quick fix, it’s helping your skin actually strengthen and repair itself over time."
Sara added, "Think fewer fine lines, more glow (the good kind, not the sweaty kind), and that lovely, fresh-faced look that makes you go, 'Yep, I look well today.'
"All while still looking like you just a bit smoother, firmer, and more confident in your own skin."
If Botox feels a bit too much, or you want to dip your toe into the skin treatment world gently, mesotherapy is your best option.
Sara reassured, "It’s subtle, it’s natural-looking, and the results speak for themselves."
If you’re just starting out or want to really tackle dullness, dehydration, or early signs of ageing, it is recommended to do a course of four sessions, spaced about three to four weeks apart. That gives your skin a proper boost and helps build up hydration, smoothness, and firmness over time.
After that? A maintenance treatment every 6 to 8 weeks is perfect to keep your skin topped up and looking fresh, especially if you’re not going down the Botox route.
