The level of incredible books being written by Irish authors never fails to make us proud.
For such a tiny country, we have produced some of the biggest and most loved novels of the last few years.
From Normal People and Small Things Like These to The Rachel Incident, Ireland has had some phenomenal releases but one stands out for 2024.
Eason has chosen Colm Tóibín's Long Island as their book of the year and we're not one bit surprised.
The harrowing novel is the sequel to his bestselling book Brooklyn, which was published in 2009.
The sequel returns to the world of Eilis Fiorello as she is dealt with the most heartbreaking news - her once loyal and beloved husband Tony has cheated on her.
A man with an Irish accent appears at Eilis Fiorello’s door on Long Island, changing everything in an instant. Since leaving Brooklyn, Eilis and Tony have built a secure, contented life—a bit stifled by the in-laws close by, but solid after twenty years of marriage and with two children heading toward a bright future.
But the stranger’s arrival reveals a truth that makes Eilis question the life she has created. For the first time in years, she feels the distance from Ireland keenly, pulling her thoughts back across the ocean. The revelation compels her to consider a return to Ireland, to her mother, and to the people and places she once chose to leave.
Did she make the right choice marrying Tony all those years ago? And, now, is it too late to imagine a different life?
Tóibín was overjoyed to hear Eason chose his novel as the book of the year and said it was an honour.
Long Island is a devastating read, especially if you're a huge fan of Brooklyn like I am, but the surprise twist keeps you glued to the story from page one.
Tóibín shared, "This is great news. I am delighted that booksellers at Eason's have chosen my novel. On Christmas Day I will raise a glass to their discernment and good judgment. In the meantime, I send everyone at Eason's humble and fraternal greetings."
Why don't you pick up a copy of Long Island over the Christmas break? It may not be the most cheerful read but it'll be one book you won't be able to put down.
