There’s a new Sally Rooney novel coming this year

Cassie Stokes

2021 is shaping up to be a pretty amazing one.

If you’re a fan of books or a fan of TV you will be familiar with Sally Rooney, the woman behind Normal People which was a hit both on and off screen.

Not only was Normal People one of the most talked about books but it was one of the most talked about TV shows over lockdown 2020. It is responsible for bringing Paul Mescal into our lives.

But that’s not all, Rooney was nominated for an Emmy for her work on the TV adaptation of the show, which was broadcast on the BBC in 2020. And now, she’s just announced her third novel to be released later this year.

It’s titled ‘Beautiful World, Where Are You,’ and it’s looking set for a September release.

Normal People and Rooney’s first novel Conversations with Friends were both international successes in their own right, so we have no doubt that this next addition to the book shelf will be a hit too.

“Beautiful World, Where Are You tells the story of Alice and Eileen, two best friends nearing their thirties in different places and on very different trajectories,” reads the blurb.

“As the summer approaches, they exchange emails about art, friendship, the world around them and the complicated love affairs unfolding in their own lives. They say they want to see each other again soon. But what will happen when they do?”

Publisher Alex Bowler said: “Sally’s new novel is a book of friendship and sex, art and faith, power and love. It absorbs you once again in the inner lives of characters with brilliant minds and aching hearts, while marking the next creative leap from a singular writer. The book scintillates with intelligence, empathy and, yes, beauty.”

And yes, we can’t wait to read it.
