Busy Philipps’ Insta-post shares crucial advice on her ‘flipped ovary’

"It's called torsion".

Busy Philipps has taken to social media to explain how she ended up in hospital with a twisted ovary. The actress said that she had been experiencing a terrible pain in her right side and when she was checked out by doctors, they determined that her ovary had flipped over. She said that she was lucky as hers flipped back without any intervention but that if it doesn't move back to its correct position by itself, surgery is sometimes required. Busy also noted that this same thing happened to one of her good friends who later had to have her ovary removed. In a very real and honest admission, Busy then said that although she felt silly going to seek medical attention, it was the right decision.

Anyway, I had a crazy excruciating pain in my lower right side and after a long time at Mass Gen, it was determined my ovary had flipped over- it's called torsion. Mine flipped back by itself and I'm ok but sometimes if it doesn't you have to get surgery or you can lose your ovary(which actually happened to a really good friend of mine) Anyway, my point of posting this was I felt like an idiot for going to the hospital but ultimately, going was the right move! It always is! Even if they say you're fine and send you on your way! And a huge thank you to the amazing doctors and nurses who took care of me! ❤️❤️❤️

Dr Grace Lau spoke to SELF about how torsion can present, explaining that it can present itself when a benign cyst "is weighing the ovary down". She also said that the pain can come and go, it can be dull or crampy and sometimes it's accompanied by nausea and/or vomiting. At the hospital, an ultrasound is generally needed to determine if torsion is causing the pain and then surgery is often conducted to return the ovary to its original position.
