Kate Garraway says “it doesn’t get easier” in latest update about Derek

“There isn’t an end-point and it doesn’t get easier.”

TV presenter Kate Garraway has given an update on her husband Derek Draper amid his recovery from a series of Covid-19 complications.

Derek contracted Covid in March 2020, and became seriously unwell as a result. He was put in an induced coma in June 2020, and awoke from it a month later. He remained in hospital until last April, and he now requires round-the-clock care.

Giving an update on how Derek is doing, Kate shared that they are still facing many challenges.

Kate shared a video to express her gratitude as her documentary, Caring for Derek, received a nomination from the National Television Awards. She also used her platform to let fans know how she is getting on.

She said that she understands that she came across as “frustrated, emotional and depressed” in the film, and that she still experiences those feelings now.

“I’ve been all of those things and more in recent months and weeks and that’s because that’s the thing about caring, you want it to carry on because you want the person to be surviving and still be with you so you can care for them,” she said. “But there isn’t an end-point and it doesn’t get easier.”

Earlier this summer, Kate shared that Derek had to be hospitalised after suffering “severe life-threatening sepsis”.

On an episode of Good Morning Britain, she said she got a call from Derek’s carer that he was unwell, and she came home immediately. They called an ambulance and in A&E they learned that he had sepsis.

“We called an ambulance, went to A&E, where they said he had very severe sepsis, life-threatening sepsis,” Kate explained at the time. “So it was really dramatic.”

Thankfully, Derek was able to recover from the condition in a number of weeks and was subsequently discharged from the intensive care unit.
