Meryl Streep delivered the anti-hate speech the world needs to hear right now

Cassie Delaney

The Golden Globes were on last night and as the Glamourous and influential stars of Hollywood assembled, some seized the opportunity to talk about recent political events.

Meryl Streep was on stage to accept the Cecil B DeMille and used her time on the stage to discuss the “one performance” that shocked her during the year.

“There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart,” said the actress.

“Not because it was good, there was nothing good about it, but it was effective and it did its job.”

“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. Someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie, it was real life.”

Streep continued to say that Donald Trump’s bullying and behavior legitimizes and breeds hate.

“This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform,” said Streep. “By someone powerful, it filters down into everyone’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.”

“Disrespect invites disrespect, violence invites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others we all lose.”

In her speech, Streep paid tribute to the backgrounds and varied ethnicities of those in Hollywood and called for an end to hatred and vilifying.

According to The Guardian, in response to her comments Trump said he was “not surprised” to be targeted by “liberal movie people.”
