There’s a new record holder in town.

Last night, Selena Gomez lost her long-reigning title as the most followed woman on Instagram to none other than Ariana Grande.

At the time this article was published, Ariana was overtaking Selena by 76,091 followers, now standing as the largest followed female on the platform.

Ariana Grande current stats:

Selena was the most followed person on Instagram until October 2018, when Cristiano Ronaldo took her place with a staggering 155m followers and counting.

But it’s no surprise that these two overtook the Wolves singer. Since falling sick and battling with her ongoing mental health issues, Selena decided to take a step back from social media, focusing more on living in the “present” and working on herself and so, has reduced her social output to a few posts per month.

But as we know, Instagram relies on users being active and so, in turn, rewards those active users by helping them to increase their engagement when they increase their usage on the app.

As Ariana is not only globally famous, Billboard’s Woman Of The Year and the first star to ever beat herself from the top place in the charts with another one of her own songs – she’s also extremely active on Instagram, often posting a couple times a day and so, reaches a wider audience as a reward by the platform which in turn is making her more seen, leading to more followers.

Technical but there you have it, the now most followed woman on Instagram.
