Gone Girl is on the TV tonight, if you’re looking for something stressful to watch

Suburban love, but make it awful.

Gone Girl is on the TV tonight, so if you’re looking for a deeply stressful and very unnerving psychological thriller to delve into, look no further.

Based on the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name, the film details the unraveling of a marriage as Nick Dunne (played by Ben Affleck) comes to terms with his wife Amy’s (played by Rosamund Pike) disappearance.

Many other chaotic and incredibly upsetting things happen over the course of the film – none of which we will mention here for fear of spoilers.

Just don’t get too attached to Neil Patrick Harris, yeah?

Released in 2014, Gone Girl became David Fincher’s most financially successful film grossing $369 million worldwide.

Pike’s performance as Amy was praised almost universally by critics as she was nominated for several awards including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA.

The film received an approval rating of 87 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 8/10.

Despite this, the movie – and Flynn’s work in general – has received mild criticism for its portrayal of women.

On her website, the author admitted that her characters often do not offer a “particularly flattering portrait of women, [which is] fine by me.

“Isn’t it time to acknowledge the ugly side? I’ve grown quite weary of the spunky heroines, brave rape victims, soul-searching fashionistas that stock so many books. I particularly mourn the lack of female villains.”

Gone Girl airs tonight at 9pm on Film 4.
