Kevin McCallister might return to our screens once again, as confirmed by the actor who played the iconic role in the first two Home Alone instalments, Macaulay Culkin.
Culkin, 45, was only 10 years old when he starred in the first Home Alone film, released in 1990. The film then went on to become a holiday classic.
The American actor has given the fans of the beloved Christmas films hope that there might be a new instalment, stating that he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to reprising his iconic role, however adding that the film would “have to be just right”.
According to a Variety report, during a stop on his 'A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin' tour, the actor has been thinking about the storyline of a potential film, which would be a sequel to the 1990 film and its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, released just two years later.
“I kind of had this idea. I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in… and he’s the one setting traps for me”, Culkin explained.
This means that Kevin this time around would fill in the role of the burglars - who were played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern in the first two films – with him trying to get back inside the family home during the holidays.
According to Culkin, “the house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship,” and Kevin would be attempting to “get let back into son’s heart’ kind of deal.”
The actor became one of the biggest child stars of the decade following the release of the first two Home Alone films. The Home Alone franchise also consists of four other entries, however Culkin was not involved in those films.
Culkin took a break from acting in 1995 and returned eight years later.
He reprised the role of Kevin McCallister although not on the big screen. This was for a Google ad for Google Assistant in 2018. There, he recreated the most memorable scenes from the film and asked Google Assistant to set reminders.
However, in spite of Culkin’s comments, not all of the names involved in the productions of the first films are in favour of returning to the franchise.
Chris Columbus, who directed the first two films, stated that a new film should never be made, in comments made earlier this year for Entertainment Tonight.
You simply cannot go back to those old times the same way again, according to the director, who said that Home Alone really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that”, and that “it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.”
