Three Florida police officers found themselves at the centre of a social media frenzy this week after they shared a selfie on Facebook.

The Gainesville Police Department shared a photo of  Officers Nordman, Hamill and Rengering over the weekend as they went out to help following Hurricane Irma.

They explained that the group was “part of the night crew, getting ready to do some work.”

And the trio quickly racked up plenty of admirers, with the post getting 324,000 likes and 192,000 shares at the time of writing.

But it was the 125,000 comments that really captured the internet’s attention.

One person said:

“Oh no! I need immediate assistance…for something…from the officer on the right….”

Another added:

“…and… just like that… the switchboard lights up and the crime rate in Gainesville explodes as otherwise law-abiding women suddenly go on a “Thelma and Louise” like crime spree.”

A different social media user joked:

“BREAKING NEWS: record amount of airline tickets were purchased today for Gainesville Florida.

“In unrelated news, the Gainesville crime rate is on the rise in the evening hours.”

Meanwhile, another person simply wrote;

“I have fallen and I can’t get up. Please officer come help a poor female out!!”

The police department took the comments in stride, later updating the original post to assure people a calendar was on the way to raise funds for the Hurricane Irma recovery in Florida.

They also shared more info about the officers, much to the delight of commenters.

The update read:

“UPDATE: 1. We are dying with the comments. You’ve actually made our chief blush with some of them.

“2. MRS. Nordman and MRS. Hamill have also enjoyed knowing how millions of women are going crazy over their husbands,

“3. We can confirm that Officer Rengering (far right with the amazing hair) IS SINGLE.

“4. On another note, Officer Rengering is being placed into Cougar Prey Protective Care, similar to the witness protection program for his safety.

“5. Please do not call 9-1-1 and request this groups respond to your ‘incident.’

“6. There WILL be a calendar.”

“Thank you all for the hilarious comments… they have brightened our time up here.

“As for the calendar, we are going to try and do something fairly quickly and funds raised will go to Hurricane Irma recovery here in Florida.”
