The Crown to follow in Downton Abbey’s footsteps with potential movie in the works

The Crown swiftly became one of the most-watched shows on Netflix

The final series of The Crown airs this autumn, but this won’t be the final goodbye.

According to reports, the show’s creators are eager to continue the story in different ways, including a potential movie.

Insiders claim the story will continue at some point in the future so we’ll likely see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s role in the Royal Family portrayed on-screen. Creators are also eager to feature Prince William as he takes on more responsibility as a senior member of the monarchy.

An insider told The Sun that fans have plenty more to look forward to after the show ends later this year.

“Although this sounds like a drastic change, it’s one that proved a huge success for Downton Abbey, which ran for 52 episodes before continuing as two hit films.

“Creating a movie, or perhaps a series of specials, means creators would have so much more flexibility to jump in terms of time and topics. They could deliver a prequel, perhaps focusing on the abdication crisis in the 1930s.

“Down the line, there’s the option to revisit the 21st-century royals, perhaps focusing on Harry meeting Meghan and his fallout with William,” they added.

The Crown debuted on Netflix in 2016 with Claire Foy and Matt Smith taking on the lead roles as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip.

The final season of the show will focus on Princess Diana’s death and Prince William’s relationship with Kate Middleton.
