The first look at The Purge TV series is here and it’s absolutely chilling

“It’s Purge night. Anything goes.”

The Purge is making the move from the big screen to our TV screens – and it looks like it’s going to be chaotic.

The 10-episode series will revolve around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal.

Set in an altered version of the world where the United States is run by a totalitarian political party, it will follow a group of seemingly unrelated characters who live in a small city.

But as The Purge clock begins to wind down, each of the characters is forced to confront their past as they try and figure out how far they are willing to go in order to survive the night.

The franchise creator, James DeMonaco, revealed the exact timeline of The Purge series last year – and where the TV series will fit in.

DeMonaco, who is writing and executive producing for the series, told Vulture:

“The TV show takes place between the first Purge and the last movie.

“So if 20 Purges have taken place, or 15, we’re probably on the seventh or eighth in the TV show. It’s an established thing that people have gotten used to.”

And since the 10-episode format is obviously a lot longer than one standalone film, DeMonaco also weighed in on how the format will change the narrative style.

Explaining that the films were “more like events,” he added:

“In the TV show, I think we’re slowing it down, and we’re using this flashback structure to enter into the non-Purge lives of these people.

“We’re going back six months or two years or into their childhood to see some things that might’ve fed into their decision-making on this particular Purge.

“The long form is actually allowing it to become more of a character study.”

The “10-episode television event” will kickstart in North America on September 4. And although there’s no Irish air date set just yet, we can only imagine it will be a matter of time.
