A necessary addition to Dublin’s creative spaces.

There’s a new theatre and performance space opening up in Dublin later this month.

The Bohemian Theatre will open its doors for the first time in the heart of north-side suburb of Phibsborough, providing a very necessary addition to the city’s interrupted cultural scene.

The theatre will open with the European premiere of Kissing the Witch, a play by Irish writer and Oscar nominee Emma Donoghue.

In development since 2018, the performance reworks the traditional fairytale narrative, presenting stories that audiences know and love for what they really are.

Sexism, misogyny, and heteronormativity will be brought to the fore as the five traditional tales are retold and reimagined by the woman who gave us Trespasses, The Sealed Letter and of course, the incredible Room.

As well as this, a dark and twisted examination of Dublin’s underbelly will also be portrayed in The Fetch Wilson, a play inspired by the works of Edgar Allen Poe.

Premiering at the Edinburgh Fringe last year, the play received much praise from critics who called it “ingeniously written” and “forensically directed.”

The Bohemian Theatre’s official opening is announced by The Corps Ensemble, Phizzfest, and McGeough’s, The Bohemian Bar.

The Corps Ensemble’s Edwin Mullane and Hillary Dziminski said that they are “delighted” to launch the new space following the recent closure of many of Dublin’s creative venues.

“With the current cleansing of the city’s cultural and arts spaces, we see The Bohemian as a cultural forum – a place to explore, play, and discuss the issues that have arisen in today’s crisis-prone society,” they said.

“Central to our mission is the impulse to connect with the community through innovative, visceral, and challenging work and fostering new relationships with Ireland’s most exciting arts practitioners; we look forward to engaging with national and international artists to create meaningful, impactful performance in our new home.”

The Fetch Wilson runs from October 29 to November 2. Kissing The Witch runs from October 29 to November 9.
