Whoopi Goldberg is returning as Sister Mary Clarence in a new Sister Act: The Musical

Joyful, joyful because she’s back in the habit.

Ever hear the one about the Las Vegas singer that became a nun, only for her to discover the immense singing talents of Lauryn Hill?

Well, it happened as Whoopi Goldberg’s performance as Deloris Van Cartier in the Sister Act films continues to be a firm favourite with film fans, both young and old.

The original film saw Goldberg receive a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical – at the Golden Globes and it seems that she can’t shake the habit because Sister Mary Clarence is back and she’s going to be “a little older, a little seasoned” – in Sister Act: The Musical.

The new rendition of the beloved tale will be showing at the West End in London in a newly adapted revival of the 2006 musical.

Goldberg is set for a limited 39-performance run of the updated musical at London’s Eventim Apollo from 29 July – 20 August.

Absolutely Fabulous creator and star Jennifer Saunders co-stars as Mother Superior with more additions expected to be announced soon.

The Sister Act musical, with original music by Alan Menken, based on Goldberg’s 1992 film, premiered in Pasadena, CA in a 2006 regional production before its 2009 London premiere. A Broadway production ran from 2011-2012.

This news supports a previous statement that the panelist of The View gave about the possibility of making Sister Act 3.

During an interview with Good Morning Britain, the Oscar-winner was asked about a potential movie.

“We’ve been all over Disney begging. They’ve decided that they’re going to go in a different direction with Sister Act. So it won’t be Sister Act 3 it will be a brand new rendition of Sister Act, and I guess I’ll walk through a scene and that’s how they’ll say I was part of it,” she said.

Whether or not the musical is good or bad, all we ask is that they include this absolute banger.

Please and thank you.
