After lots of waiting the festive season is finally upon us which means it’s time to eat, drink and be merry.

While there’s nothing wrong with a bit of Christmas cheer, it can be easy to go overboard when it comes to drinking at this time of year.

Drinkaware have released a new quiz to help give us insights into our drinking habits at Christmas and let’s just say our eyes were opened.

So, we decided to look at some of the healthier alternatives to our favourite Christmas beverages.

We found some of the best festive mocktails on Pinterest to try this December.

And the best part is no hangover!

 

Raspberry lemonade fizz

This great raspberry and lemonade fizz recipe from Culinary Hill is so simple to make and tastes divine. Here’s what you have to do:

Ingredients:

  • 680 grams of frozen raspberries thawed but not drained.
  • Bottle of lemonade
  • Bottle of ginger ale
  • Ice
  • Lemon slices

Method:

  1. Bring the raspberries to a simmer over medium-high heat. Stir frequently until the berries have broken apart and released their juices (about 10 to 15 minutes).
  2. Using a sieve, strain the berries to remove the seeds. Refrigerate raspberry juice until chilled (at least 2 hours).
  3. In a large pitcher combine the raspberry juice and lemonade. Stir in ginger ale and serve with ice. Garnish with lemon slices if desired.

 

Grapefruit and Rosemary

It’s so pretty! We love this gorgeous grapefruit and rosemary cocktail from TheCasualCraftlete. Here’s how you can recreate it at home.

Ingredients:

For Rosemary Syrup:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 sprigs of rosemary
Mocktail 
  • 2 cups fresh pink grapefruit juice
  • 1/4 cup of the rosemary simple syrup
  • 4 cups sparkling water

Method:

Syrup:

  1. Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of granulated sugar to a small pan and cook on a medium heat.
  2. Dissolve the sugar for about 5 minutes. Do not let the mixture boil or crystals will form.
  3. Once the sugar has dissolved, pour the simple syrup into a heat safe container. Add 3 sprigs of rosemary and let steep for at least one hour.

Mocktail

  1. Add 1/2 cup fresh pink grapefruit into a glass.
  2. Add 1 Tablespoon of rosemary simple syrup. Stir. Fill the remainder of the glass with sparkling water.
  3. Garnish with rosemary sprig

 

Ginger lemonade

This simple ginger lemonade recipe from Juls’ Kitchen only takes a few minutes to make and is the perfect refreshing Christmas drink. If you would like to try it out just follow the directions below.

Ingredients:

  • 4 organic lemons
  • 2 cm of fresh ginger
  • 6 tablespoons of sugar
  • Fresh water and ice cubes
  • Mint leaves to serve

Method:

  1. Squeeze the lemons into a bowl. Grate the fresh ginger and add it to the lemon juice.
  2. Strain the lemon juice and the grated ginger, pressing the pulp into the strainer with the back of a spoon.
  3. Pour the lemon juice into a jug or a bottle.
  4. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved, then water it down with cold water.
  5. Serve the ginger lemonade with ice cubes and a few sprigs of fresh mint.

 

Cranberry Mojito

Wow your guests with this tasty cranberry mojito from Sandhya’s Kitchen this Christmas. Here’s how to make it.

Ingredients:

  • 200g Fresh Cranberries
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 300 ml Orange Juice
  • Soda Water
  • Icecubes
  • 30 Mint leaves
  • Lemon slices

Method:

  1. In a medium sized saucepan add the cranberries, sugar and water and heat over medium heat.
  2. After 5 minutes, cover the pan with the lid as the berries begin to burst.
  3. Turn off the heat, allow them to cool.
  4. Grind them in a blender and strain it to collect the smooth Cranberry Syrup.
  5. Arrange glasses to be served. Add mint leaves and lemon slices and bash it up with a muddler.
  6. Pour 50 ml of Cranberry syrup into the glasses, followed by enough ice cubes.
  7. Pour 50ml of Orange Juice and then top it with the desired amount of limeade.
  8. Garnish with cranberries and mint leaves.
