Not so sweet: 9 simple – and practical – ways to cut down on sugar

OK, we're listening so...

Megan Roantree

Because November is the new January… right now we’re thinking about health-kicks.

And most of us are probably consuming faaaarrrr more sugar that we should be thanks to things like fruit juice, sports drinks, and cereal.

The dangers of consuming too much sugar includes things  like tooth decay, prolonged hunger, weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, and various other issues.

But small and simple steps can help you to cut down on your sugar intake.

If you’ve been adamant about giving up/reducing sugar for a long time but never actually do it, try some of these tips.

1) Replace cereal with other high protein options.

Cereal is fine – just not every morning. Swapping that first meal of the day from a sugary bowl of milk and cereal to something like an omelette with set you up better for the day.

2) Track your sugar intake.

Using apps like My Fitness Pal you can keep count of how much sugar you are actually consuming. Once you see that red line that tells you you’re way over the limit, it’s easier to see where you need to make changes.

3) Quit shop-bought fruit juice.

You might think you’re being healthy by drinking some OJ in the mornings but most generic juices are massively high in sugar. Stick to eating fruit or squeezing citrus fruits in your water. Or even make your own smoothie/juice at home to avoid the added sugar.
