While we all know drinking alcohol can be considered empty calories, few people can actually tell you the equivalent that glass of wine or pint of beer is having on their waistline.
New research in the UK by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) indicates that people make smarter choices when they are shown food calorie comparisons for their tipple of choice.
The research found that 80% of adults questioned did not know a large glass of wine contains a similar number of calories to a doughnut.
In a move to tackle obesity, doctors are now urging the government to introduce calorie labelling on alcohol to help inform smarter choices.
Speaking about the findings from the study, Shirley Cramertold, CEO of RSPH said:
"We go out at lunchtime and look at the sandwiches on display. We know and understand what the labelling means. We pick the sandwich or salad on the basis of the calories. But people don't think about that when they go out on a Friday night."
So how well do you know your drink counts?
A unit of alcohol contains 56 calories but many drinks contain high levels of sugar.
