There are fears over price hikes for croissants as bakers in France have warned that the rising cost of butter is eating into their profits.
The federation of French biscuit and cake makers has said the industry has been seriously affected by a 92 per cent rise in the price of butter.
The commodity accounts for up to a quarter of the mixture for croissant pastry, according to
the Guardian.
“There is a real threat of butter shortages by the end of the year which could lead to panic on markets," added Matthieu Labbe, a bakers’ industry spokesman.
The industry has called on retailers and restaurants to reflect the pressure bakers are under in the prices customers pay to attempt to alleviate more pressure for them.
Soaring butter prices have been blamed on lower milk yields in France and across the continent this year.
