From April this year, manufacturers of beverages have had to pay extra money, if the drink contains more than 5g of sugar per 100ml and even more if there's 8g of sugar per 100ml.
And sadly, San Pellegrino fell victim to this sugar tax. Rather than paying up, the brand chose to alter the recipe of the popular drink instead. So, stevia has been used in the place of sugar, and people have noticed a difference.
"We care about the enjoyment of our products and any product reformulation undergoes extensive testing and research," a spokesperson for the brand said.
"We carried out taste tests of the new San Pellegrino sparkling fruit beverage formulas with consumers, achieving very positive results before launching the range earlier this year."
According to the manufacturers of the drink, "the 'change in recipe allows San Pellegrino to reduce the sugar in our drinks without compromising on taste." However, the Internet would appear to disagree with the taste issue.The sugar tax has ruined san pellegrino, it’s gone too far.
