So much chocolatey goodness

Her

We’ve got a saying here at Her Towers: “Coffee makes us get out of bed, but chocolate makes it worthwhile.”

From dreamy mugs of rich hot chocolate to a couple of sneaky squares from the fridge during our mid-afternoon slump, we love chocolate in all its forms. Every. single. form.

The good news is that dark chocolate is actually good for us. In moderation, of course. It’s packed full of surprising health perks and we’re going to let you in on some of these these below.

Ready to come with us on our journey of chocolatey goodness?

1. It’s full of anti-oxidants

Dark chocolate contains a good amount of flavanoids. Flavanoids are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory health benefits, as well as their support of the cardiovascular and nervous systems. A bar of dark chocolate has five times the amount of flavanoids of an apple. Something to remember the next time you’re feeling guilty about tucking into a bar of choc.

2. It helps us through PMS

As we all know, chocolate releases calming endorphins that reduce anxiety. Is there any wonder we crave the stuff during that time of the month? It’s also high in magnesium which helps lift our mood and reduce water retention. Sounds good to us!

3. It’s good for our hearts

Studies have shown that one square of dark chocolate a day lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of both stroke and heart disease. #Winning

4. It can help you lose weight

As it’s full of fibre and rich in flavour, dark chocolate keeps you feeling fuller for longer and lessens our cravings for sweet, salty and fatty foods. But remember, everything in moderation, people. A mantra for life.

5. It protects the skin

Contrary to popular belief, dark chocolate that is rich in flavanol is actually good for the skin. As well as reducing stress levels, which can affect our complexion, it also helps to protect against sun damage.

6. It soothes sore throats

If you’re not feeling the best and are suffering from a sore throat, chocolate is the way to go. Dark chocolate is known to help suppress coughs and reduce inflammation in the throat.

7. It gives us energy

Dark chocolate is a natural energy booster that contains caffeine and will increase your endorphins to give you a quick pick-me-up.
