Six Ways To Improve Your Mental Health This Year

If you're struggling, why not try some of these...

Her

While we waste no time in consulting our GP or pharmacist if we think we may have a bug coming on, many of us are still reticent about dealing with our mental health.

The number of cases of suicide, depression and anxiety in Ireland in recent years has shown that mental health issues are one of the most common ailments among us and regardless of how bleak the situation can seem, there is always a solution.

If you’re struggling, why not try some of these…

Open up

The old adage of ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’ may not exactly be true but it can be a major step in the right direction. If you have a family member or a friend you can trust, open up to them about the difficulties that you are experiencing.

Whether you’re finding it hard to cope with the stress in your life or feel overcome with dark moods, being honest about it is the one of the bravest steps you can take and can help you feel less isolated. If you’d prefer not to talk to someone you know, why not contact a counsellor or start by ringing an organisation like The Samaritans, who are non-judgemental and can offer advice.

Seek advice from your GP

Doctors are trained to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental illness so if you’re confused as to the situation you’re in and don’t know what to do, they can be a great port of call. There are a range of treatments that can help, from counselling to cognitive behavioural therapy and medication.

Make lifestyle changes

If your illness is being aggravated by lifestyle factors such as a stressful work environment or substance issues, then taking action could make a big difference. Similarly, increasing your level of exercise and improving your diet has also found to boost mental health.

Reconnect with friends

Many mental illnesses can cause sufferers to withdraw from social activities but this can make the condition worse. Having a trusted network of friends and family can be a huge support.

Help others

With today’s busy schedules and work pressures, it can be easy to fall into a trap of leading an unfulfilling life. Taking some time out to help others, whether by volunteering with a charity or in your community can improve your self-esteem and give perspective.

Set goals

It’s easy to feel disorientated and dissatisfied if you’re going from month to month aimlessly. Have a think this January about what you would like to achieve over the coming twelve months and set yourself achievable, quarterly goals to focus your mind.
