Yogurt could help reduce anxiety

Megan Roantree

We’ll give it a try.

Whether you suffer from the odd anxious mind and tummy or have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, there is no denying that it’s something we all wish we didn’t experience.

There are lots of tips and tricks out there to help relieve anxiety and to prevent panic attacks and just recently this song was said to be the perfect song for reducing the unwanted experience of anxiety.

And now a popular snack that you may even eat for breakfast or lunch has been found to reduce anxiety too.

A study by Scientific Reports analysed the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum (bacteria found in some yogurt) on fish.

“Our study has shown that simple probiotics that we normally use to keep our digestive tract in sync, could be beneficial to reducing our stress levels as well,” says Aaron Ericsson, a research assistant professor in veterinary pathobiology at the University of Missouri.

An older study, which examined humans in the Netherlands found similar results when measuring the effectiveness of probiotic yogurt among anxious people.

Some participants were given a probiotic supplement and others were given a placebo.

Participants who received the probiotics showed a significant reduction in negative and aggresive thoughts and were less likely to ruminate in comparison to those given a placebo.

So if you’re looking for a way to soothe your anxiety, grab a yogurt, just make sure it’s a probiotic one.
