Behind The Player: It’s A Long Road To Kilkenny For Collette Dormer But It’s Worth Every Mile

All for the love of the black and amber.

They say it’s a long road to Tipperary, but when you are working and living in Cork, Kilkenny seems like a long way away, especially when you’ve to go there at least three times a week.

For camogie star Collette Dormer though, it is a journey she takes in her stride.

We followed her through her day in a top Cork architecture firm before heading on a 300km+ round trip to the home of hurling, and in all honesty, found it hard to see how she keeps it all going.

Speaking about her new life in Cork and her love for all things Kilkenny, Collette revealed that she always writes the word ‘Enjoy’ on her hurl.

“It’s a little reminder to myself to go out and enjoy my hurling,” she said, adding that it would be something she’d need to rethink if she ever stopped enjoying it.

Collette spoke to Her.ie as part of a new initiative for the WGPA called ‘Behind The Player’.

Explaining the campaign, chairperson Aoife Lane stated: “Our new ‘Behind the Player’ campaign aims to show players as athletes and individuals to help the sporting public to connect with them, and also places the WGPA as supporters of players as they work to be their best on and off the field.”

#BehindThePlayer is a new initiative by the WGPA (Women’s Gaelic Player Association) and PwC to highlight the dedication and commitment by female football and camogie stars behind the scenes. It highlights the players as individuals who are successful and ambitious in life and sport and positions them as role models for young people across Ireland.
