A couple who claimed their baby was swapped at birth and sold to traffickers has been reunited with their son.

Richard Cushworth and Mercedes Casanellas, who live in Texas, suspected that the baby they were given wasn’t theirs as he had darker skin and didn’t look like either of them.

The couple travelled to El Salvador, her native country, for the birth but when they returned home to Dallas they became concerned that their baby had been switched with another.

DNA tests later confirmed their fears and the doctor, Dr Alejandro Guidos, was arrested.

Yesterday, after Dr Guidos appeared in court to be formally accused, it was revealed that investigators had found the son of Mr Cushworth and Ms Casanellas.

The country’s Prosecutor General’s Office issued an order for other new mothers to have their babies DNA tested.

One of babies, born on the same day, was found to be their son.

Apparently the babies of two couples had been mixed up and will now be returned to the rightful parents.
