Dialling It In… How’s Your Phonetiquette?

Are you pushing the wrong buttons?

Her

How mannerly are you when it comes to your mobile?

When our communication devices spend most of their time attached to our hands, it can sometimes be hard to decide when not to make a call or send a text.

But the rules, it seems, are changing. A recent survey, carried out by Carphone Warehouse, found that 44 per cent of people think it’s acceptable to leave their phone on the table while eating at a restaurant.

We’re fans of brevity too it seems, with 50 per cent believing it’s acceptable to send just emoticons as a text reply.

And there is no safe haven for some, with 33 per cent of people saying it’s acceptable to take a call on the toilet.

Other findings included a mercifully small 5 per cent think it’s acceptable to play music through the speaker on a phone on public transport, while 19 per cent think nothing of answering their phone when they’re in the middle of a conversation.

If you have a little trouble with walking busy streets, the fact that 38 per cent or respondents think it’s acceptable to text while walking said busy street just might explain your issue.

In “people you never want to sit beside”, 10 per cent think it’s acceptable to use their phone in the cinema, while a more substantial 22 per cent think it’s acceptable to answer their phone while paying for something in a shop.

Recording videos at concerts seems widely acceptable, with 56 per cent saying this is ok.

And you might want to watch the latest episode of Scandal or Game of Thrones in a different room to the 23 per cent of people who think it’s acceptable to take a call while someone else is trying to watch TV.
