Trying for a baby can be a hectic time.
There are so many things to consider and so many things to do that it is hard to know where to start. But the most important thing is that you take care of yourself and enjoy the whirlwind experience.
Here are a few simple things you can do to look after yourself in the run up to pregnancy.
1. Start taking folic acid at least 14 weeks prior to conceiving
We all know the importance of folic acid during pregnancy, but it is also important to take it before you fall pregnant. Taking folic acid daily can prevent up to 70% of first-time neural tube defects such as Spina Bifida. Just one small tablet really can make a huge difference.
Safefood even recommend taking it if you aren't planning on having children anytime soon so that your body is well-prepared.
2. Healthy diet and exercise are important
It's important to stay active and healthy when trying for a baby. You don't have to make massive changes to your usual day-to-day life but a few simple changes to your diet and exercise routines can be very beneficial. Try fitting in a walk with friends in the evenings or make a conscious effort to prepare healthier dinners. All the little things will add up to make you feel fitter in no time.
3.Take alcohol, caffeine and fatty foods in moderation
Again, it's all about looking after No. 1 and becoming the healthiest version of yourself before you have a baby. You don't have to totally cut out all your favourite treats, there's no need to make yourself miserable. You can still have the things you love just in moderation.
4.Try to relax and stay stress-free
I know, I know, sometimes that is easier said than done, but try your best to take some time out and relax every now and then. Put your feet up, get the kettle on and enjoy some downtime. You'll miss having time to yourself after you have kids so make the most of it now.

5. Enjoy your recreation time
Likewise, enjoy spending time with your friends and getting out and about. Plan a few girlie nights in or head out for dinner together. Take a break from the baby planning and enjoy a good laugh.
6. The most important thing is not to panic
It's totally normal to get anxious if you don't get pregnant straight away, but the important thing to remember is that it usually takes some time. There is no hard and fast rule and it is different for everyone so don't worry if it seems to be happening more quickly for other people.
7. Visit your medical professional to find out all about planning a pregnancy
Visiting our local GP will provide you with lots of information about trying for a baby. From when the best time to conceive is to monitoring your health during your pregnancy, they are the best place to go for information and will be with you every step.
8. Once you are pregnant, continue to take folic acid
It is recommended that you continue to take folic acid for the first 12 weeks of your pregnancy to get the best benefit.
