Every week, for our ‘Food High Five’ series, we’re going to talk about food that has great health benefits.

This week, we’re looking at foods that are good to eat before a night out.

Pasta
Carbohydrates and fatty foods, such as pasta, line your stomach ahead of a night out. The more that’s in your stomach, the longer it will take for alcohol to enter your blood stream.

Going heavy on the pasta often makes us feel better but the calories aren’t always desired. Switching to whole-wheat pasta is healthier for you and will still encourage increased serotonin levels, which reduces stress. The body takes longer to break down whole-wheat pasta, which means its effects will last longer and the longer your stress levels are low, the happier you’ll be!

Chicken
Because it’s full of protein, chicken will keep you feeling fuller for longer which should prevent those late-night hunger cravings.

Chicken Pitta With Green Beans And Peppers Think portion size when you’re snacking. Sometimes the healthiest snacks are food that are smaller portions of full meals that you would put time into creating. Add chicken, green beans and peppers to a wholewheat pitta for a yummy, guilt-free snack.

Watermelon
It’s easy to become dehydrated during a night out. Fruits with high water content including watermelon and avocado should help combat this.

Watermelon Known as 'the new Viagra', watermelon contains an amino acid called citrulline that relaxes blood vessels and therefore increases your sex drive.

Beans
They are packed full of protein and fibre which will give you enough energy to keep you going until the early hours of the morning.

Avoid Gassy Foods We’re all aware of what makes us gassy. Do your best to avoid these foods in the next few weeks. Limit your consumption of cabbage, sprouts, beans and grains. Try not to overdo your intake of fibre and avoid chewing gum. Try to cut down on refined sugars.

Nuts
If you want a snack before you head out, nuts are the way to go. They will give you an energy boost and contain B vitamins which can get depleted during a night out.

L-Load Up On Some Nuts Treat yourself to some nuts for your mid-morning snack. Dieters who nibbled on two handfuls of almonds(about 70) every day lost seven inches from their waists, compared with five inches in the non-almond-eating crowd. Replace your mid-morning chocolate biscuit with the little magic guys.
