Bride Joann Howells, who is battling lung cancer, has overcome one of the greatest fears in beating her illness – cancelling her big day for treatment.
The 46-year old married her sweetheart in hospital after being granted an emergency licence.
After telling nurses and staff at Worthing Hospital in Sussex about her disappointment at having to postpone her wedding, bride Joann was surprised when the staff and local businesses rallied together to throw her a dream wedding in the unusual surroudings.
Hospital chefs baked the wedding cake and nurses scattered rose petals on the chapel floor, while a local appeal on the radio led to flowers, decorations, food and drink donations from businesses and well-wishers.
Speaking about her big day, the blushing bride said:
“It was so special, just overwhelming, with everybody helping to make our day come together.
“I just wanted to go home so I could get married, and I was just thinking I was stuck in hospital, and then they just did it all for us.”
