Otis Orth counts his dog Amber as one of his closest companions, but he didn’t realise that Amber would be responsible for saving his life.
Living in Alaska means the weather can be more than a little cold, and last weekend Otis had to take his snow machine into town to get supplies.
However, on the way he encountered a dip in the road, which caused the machine to buck out of control.
This caused Otis and Amber to land almost 50 foot from the scene of the accident.
Otis was trapped in the snow, which was so thick that passers-by wouldn’t have noticed him.
The following day, Otis couldn’t move his arms or legs, according to the Alaska Dispatch.
He tried to get Amber to go for help but she wouldn’t leave her master.
Thankfully, later that afternoon, Amber was able to run toward two men, Tom Taylor and his brother, Maynard, who were driving snowmachines.
The Taylors called state troopers after they spotted Otis, and he was taken straight to Providence Alaska Medical Center for treatment.
Otis suffered injuries to his neck and arms, as well as frostbite on his foot which may cause amputation of some of his toes.
However, he considers himself lucky to have survived.
"I owe that dog my life," he told reporters from his hospital bed. "If I had stayed out there one more night I wouldn't have made it."
