Who fancies hitting the road this weekend?
The longest month of the year is nearly over, Spring is just around the corner and there's already talk of that elusive 'grand stretch.' What better time to get out and see some of our beautiful countryside?
With thanks to
SEAT, we're bringing you five brilliant places to visit around Ireland this weekend.
1. Glendalough
Want to get away from it all after a busy January? Head to Wicklow to enjoy the tranquil surroundings of Glendalough.
Take a step back in time to explore the world-famous Round Tower and ancient church ruins, before stretching your legs along the many walks and trails through the huge oak trees. Make sure to stop and take it all in at the famous Upper Lake (pictured below) and watch the reflection of the valleys in the water.
On your way home, stop in for a cosy meal at
The Wicklow Heather.
2. Rathlin Island, Antrim
This beautiful, remote island off the north coast of Antrim is a real hidden gem. An hour's drive from Belfast will bring you to Ballycastle, where you take a six-mile ferry ride across the Sea of Moyle.
Just six miles long and one mile wide, the L-shaped Rathlin Island is home to around 140 people. One the island you can explore the harbour, craft shop, the Boathouse Visitor Centre, ancient shipwrecks and take in the incredible rugged landscape. And the best part? Head towards Mill Bay to meet some of the resident seals.
3. Malahide Castle & Gardens, Co. Dublin
If you're living in the capital and you've never visited this ancient castle, make sure you add it to your Dublin bucket list. Home of the Talbot family for over 700 years, Malahide Castle dates back to the 12th century and it really does look like something from a fairytale. The beautiful setting amongst the walled gardens makes it a really special place. The last tour of the castle kicks off at 3.30pm, so arrive early to ensure you get a slot.
Stop in at the
on-site Avoca for a cup of coffee and scone to get you fuelled before exploring the walled garden.
4. The Burren, Co. Clare
A weekend spin through the heart of Co. Clare is always a treat. The full drive through the Burren covers 83km, and you'll pass through some of the most scenic villages in Ireland, like Kilfenora, Ennistymon, Corofin and Doolin. A brisk walk at the Flaggy Shore in New Quay, or along the sandy beach at Fanore will help blow away the January cobwebs! .

5. Kinsale, Co. Cork
If you call the People's Republic your home, why not take a road trip to Kinsale? Sitting on the mouth of the River Bandon, it's easily one of the country's prettiest towns. Bustling Kinsale is packed full of great activities to enjoy - both on and off the water. Mosey through the three marinas, hop on a cruise around the harbour, and if it's a nice day, try a spot of kayaking or even scuba diving. Don't forget to pack your wetsuit!
