The most generous countries in the world have been revealed, and Irish warmth and kindness has ranked in the top 10.

The index combined a series of checks – measuring the proportion of people who have given to charity, who had volunteered their time and who had helped a stranger in the past month.

Compiled by the Charities Aid Foundation, Burma topped the poll as the most generous country in the world – with 92 per cent of Burmese respondents making a donation to charity in the past month.

Burma was closely followed by the United States and New Zealand who took second and third place respectively.

Ireland ranked in ninth place, with a world ranking at 56 per cent, placing us well above the global average of 31.5 per cent.

Chief Executive John Low said:

“The world is becoming a more generous place. It is heartening to see that, even during these times of economic uncertainty across the world, people are increasingly likely to donate money to causes that help others. It is also hugely encouraging for the future that so much of the increase in giving has been driven by the younger generation.”
