Irish rugby star Sophie Spence has this week been shortlisted for a prestigious world rugby award.

The Irish second row has been nominated for the World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year 2015, and an awards ceremony will be held this coming Sunday in London to announce the winners.

The 28-year-old was a key performer for Ireland during their second Six Nations title win this year.

She will go head-to-head for the prestigious title with French captain Gaélle Mignot and Kendra Cocksedge of New Zealand.

“It’s a great honour to be nominated at such a prestigious event and to be able to fly the flag for Irish Women’s rugby at a global level,” Spence said about the nomination.

“To be even nominated is personally a great achievement but it is also a reflection of the great success we’ve had as a team over the last twelve months.”

The news comes in the wake of an announcement by the IRUPA that it was expanding its Player Development Programme to provide membership to the Irish Women’s 15’s squad.
