We’re a nation of pre-drinkers and it’s negatively affecting our health

Niamh Maher

When it comes to pre-drinking Ireland is untouchable, and it’s not a good thing.

We’ve topped a list of 25 nations with more than 4 out of 5 of us opting to down some booze before heading out for the night. The findings were published in the Drug and Alcohol review and made public here by the Health Research Board.

The study was conducted in 25 countries, 18 of them European states.

Irish rates of pre-drinking are significantly above other countries at 85%, Norway came a close second with 80%, the rate is 75% in the UK, 67% in France and 51% in Italy. The research also found that 81% of Irish adults drink, compared to an average of 74% in other countries and 48% of Irish drinkers are heavy drinkers, compared to an average of 26% across the board.

The research also found that 81% of Irish adults drink, compared to an average of 74% in other countries and 48% of Irish drinkers are heavy drinkers, compared to an average of 26% across the board.

In a statement, Alcohol Action Ireland described the findings as worrying,

“We know that our drinking habits have changed dramatically in recent decades, with alcohol consumption in the home much more common, and supermarkets, with their low-price offerings, now the main players when it comes to alcohol sales. The worrying aspect of these findings is not so much where people are drinking, but the manner and quantity of their alcohol consumption, as this is ultimately what impacts on their health and wellbeing, regardless of where the drinking takes place,” said Conor Cullen, Head of Communications and Advocacy”

So how do we tackle this?

The blame cannot be placed solely on individuals, Alcohol Action Ireland are calling on the Government to create an environment that supports healthy decisions around our alcohol consumption.

Through their Public Health Alcohol Bill, they’re aiming to reduce the damage that alcohol causes to individuals, families, and society with a particular focus on protecting children and young people.
