The world’s oldest message in a bottle has been delivered back to the sender’s granddaughter, after washing up on shore 101 years later.
A fisherman pulled the old beer bottle containing the scribbled message out of the Baltic Sea off the northern city of Kiel, Germany last month.
Researchers worked at identifying the author, after a message written on the postcard requested the finder to return the bottle to its home address. The team managed to track down his 62-year-old granddaughter Angela Erdmann, who now lives in Berlin.
On presenting the bottle to his granddaughter, Angela said:
"That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my cheeks."
Much of the ink on the postcard has become illegible over time with dampness, but the postcard and the original bottle will be on display in Germany until May 1st when the Guinness Book of Records will be examining it for further information.
