‘This is me…’ Why one mum decided to share pictures of her cellulite

Slim, curvy, losing weight or gaining – you’d be hard-pushed to find a woman who doesn’t have cellulite in some capacity.

It’s pretty much part-and-parcel of our genetic makeup.

Now one mum-of-two – a mum who admits that previously she wouldn’t wear shorts – has adopted a f*** it approach to dimples.

Maureen Shaw is even going one step further, sharing snaps of her body on Instagram. One post from ten days ago shows her thighs and reads: “GUYS. I literally just finished a 6 mile run (go me!), and look: cellulite.

“It’s not an indicator of fitness level or overall health – and certainly not your worth as an individual. I hate when I hear or see women bashing themselves for these ‘unsightly’ bumps.

“I used to not wear shorts because I hated my thighs. But fuck it. This is me and I’m beautiful and strong.”

Another photo shared yesterday states: “Tired of seeing ads telling women to get their ‘beach bodies’ ready in time for summer. Guess what? THIS IS MY BEACH BODY ALL YEAR LONG.”

And one of Maureen’s posts from April 18 reads: “Try as I might, this belly stays soft. That’s what carrying two kids will do! When my daughter asks why my belly is ‘so squishy,’ I tell her it had to grow to become her and her brother’s first home.

“Squishy and stretch marks, if that’s what it took to get my babies, so be it! Doesn’t make my body any less beautiful or less worthy of love.”

At Her, we acknowledge that sure thing, not everyone is going to want to post similarly honest images of themselves online.

But Maureen’s messages are a nice reminder that we should give ourselves a pat on the back a little more regularly – because we’re brilliant, and great, and we put up with a lot of shite.

So hear, hear for cellulite, we say!
