While we all like to make a big deal of putting up our own Christmas trees, it’s safe to say there are few ceremonies that could equal this one. It’s one of the most famous Christmas trees in the world, and on Wednesday night it lit up in the city that never sleeps.
The 81st Annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony took place at New York’s Rockefeller Center on Wednesday night, where a a 76-foot Norway Spruce was illuminated.
Mayor of the city Michael Bloomberg flicked the switch to turn on the lights at 9pm, treating thousands of onlookers to a dazzling show of 45,000 multi-colored LED lights.

As for the star on the tree? A Swarovski star, 9½ foot wide.
The bling wasn’t the only star in attendance, though. Mary J Blige, The Goo Goo Dolls, Leona Lewis, Jewel and Mariah Carey all performed.

The spectacular tree will be on display until January 7th, after which it’ll be milled into lumber for house-building charity Habitat for Humanity.
