Welcome to The Bride Files - covering all things related to weddings as Laura prepares for her big day.
When someone proposes to their significant other there is a tradition where they will get down on one knee. People generally do it as it's the 'done thing' but where on earth did it come from?
Turns out everyone is a bit confused about the matter. No one can pinpoint exactly when the tradition began or for what reason.
But there are a few different opinions about it.
The Engagement Ring Bible has suggested that it's got to do with royalty and knighthood. When a man is being knighted he kneels down to pay respect to the King or Queen. Thus, a man or woman who wishes to propose will go down on one knee to show respect.
It also happens in religion when people are kneeling in front of God and during prayer. Given that a lot of weddings are performed in the church then it would make sense that the religious element would precede this.
Another reason is that it's a less dominant way of asking the person. If you think about it, it would be fairly intimidating if the person was towering over you asking you to spend the rest of your life with them. They might as well be shouting, "MARRY ME!"
The final suggestion is that it's a sign of submission, that the man or woman who is proposing is offering everything they have to their loved one, like one would do on the battlefield.
So, basically, they have given up - lovely! I think I prefer the other options.
