Science reveals why some of us cry more than others

You can blame science for your sensitivity...

Amanda Cassidy

I’m a massive crier…and I’m not ashamed.

My sisters are the same – we come from a long history of weeping women where everything from TV ads, sad-looking puppies and the end of sales makes us howl.

Well, now science can explain why.

Here are the factors that make us more prone to tears; Gender (women are known to cry more than men, about five times a month to be exact), previous trauma, hormonal fluctuations, stress, and lack of sleep can all contribute.

Your personality type also makes a difference. A study has shown that those who are neurotic are more likely to cry.

Guilty.

Extraverts are more prone to tears in negative situations and those who are empathetic. Bless my tender heart.

New research has also classified about 20 per cent of us as HSP’s or highly sensitive people – it means we process both bad and good information more thoroughly which can prompt waterworks apparently.

But check your handy for the silver lining – no, not that type…Crying is a very positive thing.

It can sooth, relieve stress and boost your mood afterwards which may be the reason why we like a good old sob when hungover to hell.

Stay strong sisters.
