Seven Reasons… You Need To Visit The Lakelands

The beautiful Lakelands region of Ireland is one of the most-loved Irish holiday destinations, and it's not hard to see why. The history of Athlone Castle Sitting at the heart of the Lakelands, Athlone town is rich in culture, heritage and ancient traditions. The Westmeath town's mighty castle dates all the way back to the 13th century, and its long and bloody history is today brought to life in a series of modern exhibitions inside the original building. Athlone is also home to Luan Gallery, a contemporary art gallery housing the work of both established and emerging artists from Ireland and abroad. Once you've explored these two cultural gems, head on over to Lough Ree and hire a boat for the afternoon. Bliss. 2. The water sports along The Shannon Blueway The Shannon Blueway is Waterways Ireland's newest recreational holiday experience - and we can't wait to explore it! Home to beautiful trails both on land and on water, it's the perfect spot for an action-packed weekend away. Activities on the water include stand up paddle-boarding, canoeing and cruising. Or if you're looking to stay on terra firma, rent a bike, or head off on one of the many beautiful walking trails. 3. The peace and tranquility of Lough Derg A magnificent stretch of water located between Clare, Tipperary and Galway, Lough Derg is surrounded by gorgeous viewpoints and picturesque lakeside villages. Take a trip on a canoe, explore one of the many walking trails, visit one of the many castles, or try your hand at stand up paddling, sailing, cruising or fishing. 4. The magic of Clonmacnoise Founded by St Ciarán in the 6th century, Clonmacnoise in Shannonbridge, Co. Offaly, was the first established university in Europe. Take a major step back in time to explore the monasteries, ruins of the early cathedral, seven churches, famous round towers, and learn about Viking invasions of years past. 5. The elegance of Crom Estate Set on the shores of Upper Lough Erne in Co. Fermanagh, Crom is one of Ireland's most important nature conservation areas. Wild deer, pine marten and many more rare species can all be found on the estate. The 2,000 acre demesne alsocontains ancient woodland, tranquil islands, estate cottages and Old Crom Castle. Enjoy an inspirational walk through the woodland and along the nature trails, where you can also enjoy spectacular views along the Kingfisher Cycle Trail. Also take a trip to the nearby Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark. 6. The views from Arigna Miner's Way The Arigna Miner’s Way and Historical Trail in Leitrim is a 118km-long walking route that starts and ends at Arigna. Touching three lakes (Lough Allen, Lough Key and Lough Arrow), and crossing three low mountain ranges (Corry Mountain, the Curlew Mountains and the Bricklieve Mountains), it's a gorgeous spot for a couple of days of fresh air and exercise. 7. The majesty of Strokestown Park Estate This stunning 18th century mansion in Strokestown, Co. Roscommon is the final spot on our Lakelands wishlist. The beautifully-restored six acre Georgian walled garden complex is a stunning place to spend an afternoon.
