So this is how fruit & veg should be grouped together in the fridge

This should help you cut down on waste.

Cathy Donohue

It makes sense.

After doing a big shop, figuring out how to pack everything into the fridge is a tough enough job, let alone trying to decide what should be placed beside what.

Thankfully, the folk at Sainsbury’s have whittled it down, and outlined how exactly fruit and veg should be stored.

Spotted on The Daily Mail, the main reason for separating certain items is because some fruit and veg release a gas by the name of ethylene.

This process can lessen the shelf life of the surrounding fruit and veg, which means you have to throw them out, which means you have to buy more. And so the vicious circle continues.

When it comes to cauliflower, peppers, broccoli, and cucumber, you should keep them in the fridge but away from fruit so the pesky ethylene can’t do any damage.

If you’re anything like us, you probably store potatoes and onions together but this is a bad idea as according to the supermarket, onions can have an impact on how potatoes taste if stored near each other.

Other tips include the fact that carrots, parsnips, and beetroot should always be stored in the fridge while bananas should be stored away from all fruit and veg as they can cause items to ripen too quickly.
