Teenagers Reading Mean Tweets Is No Laughing Matter

Jimmy Kimmel’s famous ‘Mean Tweets’ section of his show has gained legendary status since it first kicked off, with President Obama himself getting involved in the fun just last week.

However, a video from the Canadian Safe School Network is one that has really touched the hearts of people worldwide, as they try to show the harsh and oftentimes tragic consequences of cyber bullying.

Here, some brave teenagers read out ‘mean tweets’ – the scary part of it is that this actually happens in real life, and young people across the world deal with bullying like this on a daily basis.

“We wanted to use the ‘Mean Tweets’ model because in a way, those videos give the message that cyberbullying is OK – even funny,” said president of the Canadian Safe School Network, Stu Auty.

“But adult celebrities have the maturity and confidence to overcome these hurtful words. Children don’t. For regular kids, words can cut like a knife.”

The powerful video message sees the laughing track that normally features in the celebrity mean tweets fade slowly into the background until it is silenced by the last tweet:

“No one likes you. Do everyone a favour. Just kill yourself,” the teenage girl reads.
