Your bedroom should be your haven when it comes to relaxing nights in and deep slumber, but if you’re a fan of patterned bedsheets, you could be working against your own sleep shifts.

According to one head stylist, one of the most common mistakes being made by people decorating their bedrooms is opting for bright patterns and loud colours in their bedding and décor.

As well as keeping the brain active, brighter shades can prevent you from winding down.

Speaking to Marie Claire, head stylist Alexander Reid said:

“You want the space to be a calming refuge. You want to simply unplug and feel safe.”

Instead, Reid suggests opting for white or neutral bedding to keep a neutral base and a serene environment.

Looking to make more of a statement of style or express your personality?

Reid advises adding a colourful pillow or a bed throw:

“A pillow or throw can be soft and special, but it’s also not too expensive to swap.”

Bedding Look away now if you’re squeamish. Studies have found traces of faeces, salmonella and E.Coli on bed linen, including some that was fresh from the washing machine. It’s important to wash pillows every six months. Wash your sheets once a week and make sure the water is hot.

The soft furnishings can also be easily removed at the end of the day – which means you can climb into bed for a deeper, more satisfying sleep.
