Twins end up being born in different years despite only 15 minutes between them

The rare occurrence has around a one in two million chance of happening.

A Californian couple welcomed a beautiful baby boy this New Year’s Eve – just before the clock struck midnight and his twin sister came into the world on New Year’s Day.

Parents Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo gave birth to little Alfredo Antonio Trujillo and Aylin Yolanda Trujillo only 15 minutes apart at Natividad Medical Centre in Monterey County in California but both children will have separate birth days and years.

Alfredo Antonio Trujillo was delivered first at 11:45 p.m and weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce. And Aylin, who was the first baby to be born at the facility in 2022, weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces.

“It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays,” said Fatima, the new mum. “I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”

The unique twins will soon join the Trujillo family and be introduced to their three older siblings, who are said to be dying to meet the new additions.

Dr Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor at the medical centre, said the birth of the twins was “one of the most memorable” moments of her entire career.

“It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022,” she said. “What an amazing way to start the new year.”

Roughly 1.6 million twins are born around the world each year. However, the chance of twins born with different birthdays like this are quite rare, with experts estimating the chance of twins being born in different years as roughly one in two million.
