May 23rd will go down in history but so will today, October 22nd.
That’s because the Marriage Equality Bill was officially passed into law at the Seanad earlier this afternoon.
The moment, which was followed by applause from those present, was captured on camera.

Congratulations to all those celebrating in Ireland after the Marriage Equality Bill passes all stages in the Parliament. #YesEquality — Scott Cuthbertson (@ScotCuthbertson) October 22, 2015
Marriage Equality Chairwoman Gráinne Healy said today: “We’re delighted that the Marriage Bill 2015 has now passed all stages in the Houses of the Oireachtas and will be presented to the President Michael D Higgins for his signature.
“Once the Bill is enacted same sex couples who have married elsewhere will have their marriages recognised immediately. Those couples in Civil Partnerships who wish to be married will have a very short waiting period until they too can marry.
“Finally, loving same-sex couples all across Ireland can marry the person they love. Thank you Ireland.”
