Can We Do It All Again? Highlights From The MTV Europe Music Awards

We're counting down the days to next year...

Cathy Donohue

An invite to the MTV Europe Music Awards called for great excitement in the Her.ie office and that was nothing in comparison to the actual event.

This year, the awards took place in Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, a state of the art venue that only opened last year.

The Hydro (which we compared to an urban spaceship), can hold up to 13,000 people and there was a brilliant atmosphere on Sunday night as huge crowds travelled to see their idols.

While the event as a whole was extremely impressive, there were a few moments which stood out as particular highlights.

U2 are back and better than ever

Earlier this year, U2 returned to the music scene with Songs of Innocence. While their decision to team up with Apple to release their new album via iTunes wasn’t approved by everyone, there is no denying how impressive they are singing live.

The Hydro was pitch dark for Every Breaking Wave save for a single light on the stage and the band, together with a full string selection, had the audience spellbound. That’s no mean feat when you take into account how many people were there, here’s hoping they announce a tour soon.

MTV EMA's 2014 - Show

Oh Ed…

Let’s be honest, he was always going to feature in our MTV highlights, we know you love him just as much as us and he proved exactly why when he performed on Sunday night.

Mr Sheeran took to the stage to perform the gorgeous Thinking Out Loud complete with dancers, although if we’re honest, he didn’t need any accompaniment. The picture below shows 23-year-old Ed posing with fans before the big event…he’s just too lovely.

What a voice!

In another show-stopping moment from the EMA’s, Alicia Keys performed We Are Here although this didn’t take place in the Hydro. Instead, it was broadcast from the nearby O2 Academy but this didn’t make a difference as her immense talent doesn’t need any bells or whistles.

Alicia, who is thought to be about seven months pregnant, gave it everything and it was definitely a huge highlight of the night.

Ode to Ozzy

Ozzy Osbourne collected the award for this year’s Global Icon award, presented to him by none other than Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash.

Although Slash informed the audience that Ozzy scares the hell out of most people, he also said that the Black Sabbath frontman is a gentle guy. Judging by Ozzy’s heartfelt thank you to his fans, he was bowled over by the award.

Miss Minaj

We had to give the lovely Nicki a mention as the Anaconda star presented the awards. Between her daring outfits and hilarious accents, not to mention her brave attempt at a spot of golf, Nicki certainly won us over.

The Ryder Cup was held in Scotland this summer and it’s a country renowned for its golf courses, so she decided to show off her own skills. Of course, being Nicki she had to putt the ball into a fake bum.

Make of the below what you will…

We had a ball and are counting down the days to next year’s event. Here are the other winners from Sunday night in case you missed out…
